Geekcorps is, well, just what it says. Its Internet-age volunteers bridge the digital divide one network at a time in the villages of the low-income world. They train people in information and communications technologies and advise them on starting businesses using these new skills. Working in Timbuktu and beyond, Geekcorps relies on its “Desert PC,” specially designed for the low electricity access and high temperatures and dust of the Sahara.

IESC Geekcorps’ program in Mali has been highlighted in a Volunteers for Prosperity (VfP) video, see it below! The video features Geekcorps Country Director Matt Berg who discusses a variety of the innovative Geekcorps technologies and initiatives that have been implemented in Mali such as the 
Volunteers for Prosperity (VfP) was established as a result of a Presidential Executive Order to encourage international voluntary service by highly skilled Americans to promote health and prosperity worldwide. This agenda is represented by a number of Presidential initiatives including the Digital Freedom Initiative. IESC Geekcorps is a VfP partner.
On January 2, 2007, IESC Geekcorps’ work in Mali and Geekcorps Director Wayan Vota were featured on 100.1 KRUU-FM’s “Open Views” program hosted by DJ Sundar Raman. “Open Views” is an exploration of open-source and free-culture movements around the world, stretching beyond the limits of software. The show’s purpose is to provide a view into the rich world of collaborative development, open ideas, independent media, and new business models.
